On May 25, Star Wine List came to Vienna and celebrated the best wine lists of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and the teams behind them. The celebration was held during VieVinum. 122 wine lists joined the competition and 46 made it to the finals – and here are all the winners!

"It was very fascinating to go through the wine lists of Austria, Switzerland and Germany, and to really see how considerate sommeliers creating these lists are. The overall quality is excellent and apart from some spelling issues, the clarity and the variety of choice and depth is comparable to other top wine lists around the world," said Heidi Mäkinen MW, part of the four-headed jury panel, about judging the competition.

Her fellow jury member Manu Rosier, also Star Wine List's ambassador in Berlin, agreed:

"The overall quality of the wine lists this year was exceptional. It added this difficulty for us to judge this year, which made it all more fun and exciting. We also see some new winners, which shows that a wine list never sleeps and new exciting concepts are coming to live every year. Well done to all the finalists and to all the venues that have submitted their wine lists. I can't wait for next year!" he said.

The jury panel also consisted of:

• Véronique Rivest, top Canadian sommelier
• Reeze Choi, third Best Sommelier of the World 2023 (ASI)

"What a difficult task this has been! But a rejoicing one too. The quality level of these lists is incredibly high, and makes it difficult to choose. Kudos to all participants: you definitely make us want to visit," said Véronique Rivest about her jury duty.

Germany, Austria and Switzerland are included in our 2023-2024 International tour, and this was the third time we were running it in Germany and Austria, and the second time for Switzerland. There was one winner per country in each category, except the Sustainable Wine List and Grand Prix categories, which had one winner for the entire region.

And now – here are all the wine lists that won Gold Stars:

Categories and criteria

Star Wine List judges the wine lists in several categories such as the Best Sparkling Wine List and Best By the Glass List. These categories are the same across all of the awards. In addition, local categories may be added. We have commercial partners for certain categories, such as the Best Austrian Wine List, presented by Austrian Wine. The commercial partners are, however, never involved in the selections of finalists or winners — that is completely up to our independent jury panel.

The criteria for the jury are straightforward but not simple: Vote for the most exciting wine list representing the category.

The winners in the international categories will qualify for our International Final in June 2024, where they will face off with the category winners from other countries and continents.
