Barra in Berlin, Germany won the category Sustainable Wine List for DACH overall in the first ever Star Wine List of the Year DACH. The event was held during VieVinum in Vienna on May 25, and the category was presented by Lingua Franca.

"What a refreshing, authentic and no-nonsense approach. And not just a vision, but real action. The wine list is voluntarily small, wines are all from highly sustainable growers, some is sourced in bulk, and overall beverages have a strong local, low environmental impact focus," said jury member Véronique Rivest about Barra's winning list.

Last year, when Star Wine List of the Year Germany was celebrated, Barra won a Silver Star in the Best Short List category.

Barra, in the heart of Neukölln in Berlin, serves a seasonal menu composed of small sharing dishes, and the menu changes daily.

Star Wine List's ambassador in Berlin, Emmanuel Rosier, describes Barra's wine list as "small but carefully curated, with only low intervention wines from small scale producers, for example from Loire and Beaujolais".

The Silver Star winners in the sustainable category were:

Die Weinbank, Ehrenhausen, Austria
FREA, Berlin, Germany

Categories and criteria

Star Wine List judges the wine lists in several categories such as the Best Sparkling Wine List and Best By the Glass List. These categories are the same across all of the awards. In addition, local categories may be added. We have commercial partners for certain categories, such as the Best Austrian Wine List, presented by Austrian Wine. The commercial partners are, however, never involved in the selections of finalists or winners — that is completely up to our independent jury panel.

The criteria for the jury are straightforward but not simple: Vote for the most exciting wine list representing the category.

The winners in the international categories will qualify for our International Final in June 2024, where they will face off with the category winners from other countries and continents.
