About Café Gupi

In Basel’s Weil am Rhein, close to the borders with Switzerland and France, lies the charming bistro and wine bar Café Gupi. One of the owners, Christoph, is also part of the brother duo behind the nearby Weingut am Schlipf-Schneider winery, and this side project combines ambitious cooking in an elevated bistro style with a wine list that celebrates the diversity of the region. Christoph himself is often on hand to help with wine pairings and recommendations.

The kitchen uses local, seasonal ingredients and the menu changes regularly. The secluded outdoor seating area is next to a leafy park and, inside, there is a modern feel with austere décor and a hint of neon. You can either order food à la carte or as a set menu with wine pairings.

The wine list is solid, focusing on everything the region has to offer – and not just on the German side of the border, but also from nearby French and Swiss producers. There are lots of fun bottles to browse through, many of which you rarely come across.

Curious about the name Gupi, by the way? It's a play on words with two of the most important grapes grown in the area: Gutedel and Pinot Noir.
