The Gold Stars at Star Wine List of the Year Austria 2026
The Gold Stars of Germany, Austria and Switzerland were announced together at VieVinum, on 18th May 2026. These are the Austrian winners.
“We saw nuances which were strongly local in the top lists without resorting to parochialism. Rather, the top examples utilised comparison, context and connections between the great wines of the world to good effect.”
– Stephen Wong MW (jury member)

Best Spanish Wine List Austria, presented by Familia Torres 2026
The wine cellar of the Family Lucian is famous for its deepness and the high quality of the bottles, mainly from Austria and France, which are stored there. There is not one famous domain from Burgundy that is not stored in this wine cellar. The cellar has been built by father and son Thomas and Maximilian Lucian for more than twenty-five years, and this is one of the best places to explore the world of fine wines in the Austrian Alps.

Best By-the-Glass List Austria, presented by Stölzle Lausitz 2026
The owner of Pub Klemo is also the owner of Heunisch and Erben. But this is one of the original spots of Viennese wine culture, even though it is not about the Viennese wines themselves (they are available at the Heurigen) but about wines from Burgundy and Bordeaux. In the small, square restaurant, you can take a seat and look at the small selection of cheeses and ham (there are also warm snacks) and the wine list, a feast for the eyes. The prices are customer-friendly, and the service is top-notch, of course. Pub Klemo is a favourite of winemakers and sommeliers, and many wine-related events...

Best Italian Wine List Austria, presented by Poggio al Tesoro 2026
Andreas Döllerer is the master of signature dishes. Creations like the baked fennel in a dough made with glacier polish from Großglockner, his Alpine Ramen, his sweetbread “Alt Wien” or the famous Schwarzbeernocken are must-haves for every visitor of this elegant alpine restaurant. Andreas Döllerer seems to have something like perfect pitch, but for taste. He is also a genius in the field of wine, and dedicated to the wines of Germany, Burgundy and Piedmont. As Andreas’ father, Hermann Döllerer, leads one of Austria's most important wine trading companies, the wine list is outstanding. You w...

Best Long List Austria, presented by Lingua Franca 2026
Chef de cuisine Gerhard Fuchs and Maitre/Sommelier Christian Zach, a dream duo of food and wine, stand for high-quality gastronomy, both in the bistro and in the little fine dining room, where the guests are served a six or seven-course menu. Fuchs loves classic cuisine, is more into French than Italian cooking and has developed a lighter, less rich style for his dishes. The wines on the list are also more precise, slim and nevertheless delicate. They may come from Burgundy or “Taste the live”-winemakers of South of Styria. Anyway, this is one of the best wine lists in the country.

Best Medium-Sized List Austria, presented by Joseph Phelps 2026
At Restaurant Esskultur in St. Jakob, Haus, wine is the framework. Part of a family-owned hotel, the entire operation is run with quiet precision by a husband-and-wife team alongside the chef, and that sense of cohesion carries through to the glass. The list reads like a study in Austrian wine, stretching deep across regions, styles, and vintages, with around 600 labels in total. Internationally, it stays grounded, with classics from Italy, Germany, and France, plus a measured touch of natural wines, mostly Austrian, with a few thoughtful outliers. There’s real flexibility: a strong by-the-gl...

Best Newcomer List Austria, presented by New Generation Wines from Georgia 2026
Frigo feels very Vienna right now, in the best possible way. The room is small, relaxed, and stylish, with elegant outdoor seating out front. It’s the kind of place where people get lost in a deep selection of Austrian classics, alongside a smart cast of new-wave producers. The cooking is modern, with a strong vegetable focus, and plates are built for sharing, nodding to tapas without feeling themed. But wine is what gives the place its pulse. The list moves easily between Austrian benchmarks, biodynamics, orange wines, and low-intervention bottles from across Europe, all curated to reflect t...

Best Rhône Wine List Austria 2026
In a town where schnitzel still dominates, Fux Restaurant in Lech looks outward. The kitchen leans Asian (those familiar with Mochi in Vienna will recognise the approach), offering a welcome break from Alpine cliché. The room balances modern mountain design with an easy, unfussy feel. But the real draw is the wine. As importers, they operate on a different level, with a Champagne selection that dives deep into the new wave of grower producers, and a Burgundy line up featuring some of the region’s most coveted names. Prices, considering the setting, feel almost fair. It’s the kind of place wh...

Best Rosé Wine List Austria, presented by Château Galoupet 2026
At Hotel Sonnenhof Tirol in Grän, the level of attention to detail borders on maniacal, in the best way possible. While the hotel offers all the comforts of a top Alpine retreat, from skiing to full-on relaxation, it remains deeply rooted in the gourmand world. Room reservations come with a tasting menu dinner, though you can also order à la carte at a reduced price. Two separate wine lists – one for whites, one for reds – make it clear that wine is taken seriously here. Champagne is a cornerstone, spanning established houses to a thoughtful range of growers, often at surprisingly fair price...

Best Short List Austria 2026
The focus here is clear from the first glance: this is Burgenland, in full. The by-the-glass programme is where it comes alive, with eight different wine flights to choose from. It is structured, generous, and designed to let you taste across the region. Behind that sits a deep bench: around 180 to 200 references open or available at the bar, and close to 800 more in the shop, all within reach to drink in or take away. The selection reads like a roll call of Burgenland’s key players – everyone you’d hope to find is here. A handful of well-chosen international names rounds it out, but the mess...

Special Jury Prize Austria 2026
Beneath the trees of one of the city’s most beautiful courtyards, owner Paul Bodner serves timeless Austrian comfort – think pork crackling dumplings with sauerkraut or a perfectly crisp Wiener schnitzel – alongside a wine list that looks thoughtfully beyond borders. The focus rests on Austria and its neighbours, featuring rare bottles from Friuli, Slovenia, and even France, balanced by a deep selection of Austrian wines. The list is entirely organic and biodynamic, with a confident leaning toward natural expressions. Rooted in tradition but open in spirit, Glacis Beisl bridges old Vienna wi...

Sustainability Prize Austria 2026
Gasthaus Rainer feels less like a restaurant and more like an extension of the family behind it. In the kitchen, father and sons work side by side, while the rest of the Rainer family moves through the dining room and cellar with the kind of warmth that can’t be staged. Thus, the service is impeccable. The food is comforting but elevated. It is deeply Styrian at heart, rooted in forest, meadow, and stream, yet refined through technique and restraint. Wine is taken just as seriously. Styria dominates the list, naturally, but Austria as a whole is represented with real depth, including older vi...
