About Gasthaus Stern
From the outside, Gasthaus Stern may look like a weathered Viennese eatery in the southern part of the city, but step inside and you’ll soon realise you’re in a serious wine destination. The menu is classic (a Wiener schnitzel is mandatory, of course) and the décor reminds one of the Austrian alpine countryside.
But the wine list? Yes, the wine list. Christian Werner has created a wine wonderland with amazing bottles from all over the world – not just Austria – and many in seriously large sizes. The pricing is very reasonable across the board and, if you’re lucky, you may see Werner himself sabering Champagne bottles in the bar.
It only made sense that when Star Wine List celebrated its ninth birthday in Vienna, Gasthaus Stern is where we ended up for the after party. As the icing on the cake, Mr Werner also has the Star Wine List logo tattooed on his arm, along with other gastronomic landmarks. Worth a visit in itself.
