About Trautentalwirt Gasthaus Rainer

Gasthaus Rainer feels less like a restaurant and more like an extension of the family behind it. In the kitchen, father and sons work side by side, while the rest of the Rainer family moves through the dining room and cellar with the kind of warmth that can’t be staged. Thus, the service is impeccable. The food is comforting but elevated. It is deeply Styrian at heart, rooted in forest, meadow, and stream, yet refined through technique and restraint.

Wine is taken just as seriously. Styria dominates the list, naturally, but Austria as a whole is represented with real depth, including older vintages, organic, low-intervention producers, and bottles that you can rarely find for such good prices. There’s a strong focus on drinkability rather than trophy hunting, though the knowledge behind the selection runs deep. It’s the kind of place where a great bottle, or three, feels completely natural next to a proper Sunday lunch. It is well worth the drive.
