On May 29, Star Wine List returned to Asia to celebrate the best wine lists and the teams behind them for the second time. 107 wine lists entered the competition and 44 lists made it to the finals. The celebration was held at Vinexpo in Hong Kong – and here we present all the winners!

“Asia is not a main wine producing continent, so we don't have a limitation when we select wine for our wine list. It is definitely the most dynamic continent with diversity. We never get bored when we judge the wine lists. And it is always hard for us to discuss who is the best as everyone is doing a perfect job. Well done Asia, thank you for submitting your lists, and keep the great work!" said jury member Reeze Choi, Third Best Sommelier of the World 2023 (ASI), about the competition.

Asia is included to our 2023-2024 International tour, and this was the second time we were running it in Asia. The winners are qualified for the International Final in Stockholm in June where they will face off with winners from around the world.

Wine lists from China, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Macau made it to the finals, where Haoma in Bangkok was the big winner with Gold Stars in no less than three categories, including Grand Prix for best wine list overall. In last year's Star Wine List of the Year celebrations, Haoma won both Sustainable Wine List of the Year Asia – and International Sustainable Wine List of the Year in the international final.

Jury

The jury for the second Star Wine List of the Year competition in Asia included a top line-up of esteemed wine experts. The four-person panel consisted of:

• Heidi Mäkinen, Master of Wine
• Reeze Choi, Third Best Sommelier of the World 2023 (ASI)
• Pascaline Lepeltier, Best Sommelier of France 2018
• Julie Dupouy-Young, several times named the Best Sommelier of Ireland

Here are all the Gold Star and Silver Star winners:

"Thank you. In Bangkok, I would say in the last seven years we have had a lot of people start importing wine because they want to drink good wines. “The Grand Prix does not only celebrate a restaurant driven by a remarkable philosophy, but also recognizes the energy put into offering a truly unique, beautiful wine and food experience. Bravo to Haoma for not resting on its laurel, but to keep on pushing and offering an even more exciting beverage program in its curation, in its design and more this year than last year!” said jury member Pascaline Lepeltier, Best Sommelier of France 2018, about Haoma's winning list.

Categories and criteria

Star Wine List judges the wine lists in several categories such as the Best Sparkling Wine List and Best By the Glass List. These categories are the same across all of the awards. In addition, local categories may be added. We have commercial partners for certain categories, such as the Best Austrian Wine List, presented by Austrian Wine. The commercial partners are, however, never involved in the selections of finalists or winners — that is completely up to our independent jury panel.

The criteria for the jury are straightforward but not simple: Vote for the most exciting wine list representing the category.
