On May 23, the best wine lists in Austria were celebrated during Star Wine List of the Year Austria. Die Weinbank in Ehrenhausen won the prestigious Grand Prix category – here are the winners in all the six categories!
The winners of Star Wine List of the Year 2022 were revealed by Star Wine List's founder Krister Bengtsson and Ambassador Manager Liora Levi during a live event in Vienna on May 23. The event was held together with Dorli Muhr and her PR agency Wine+Partners, who were hosting their annual "Christmas party" the same night.
This was the second time the awards were held for Austria, and the first time we were doing it live. Last year's Star Wine List of the Year Austria was a purely online event.
For the Star Wine List of the Year awards in Austria, Star Wine List was also happy to partner with the website and sommelier community Kalk & Kegel.
The winners are all qualified to the international final of Star Wine List of The Year that will be held in June.
– Austria’s best wine list with more than 600 references
Die Weinbank, Ehrenhausen
"We had never expected to win, it is a great honor and it proves that you don't have to have Bordeaux on your wine list to actually win a great prize," says Die Weinbank's sommelier and co-owner Christian Zach.
"Die Weinbank has on of the most comprehensive Austrian wine lists in the world. Furthermore, they cover all major wine regions in depth and breadth. Quite an achievement!" says jury member Rajat Parr, winemaker, author and sommelier.
Best Medium-Sized List
"I'm overwhelmed. We've only been open for eight weeks. Even being nominated together with all these great places and great people was totally overwhelming, and winning this prize was totally unexpected. I'm speechless," says Simon Schubert, owner and sommelier at Reznicek.
Jury member Salvatore Castano, Best Sommelier of Europe and Africa 2021, says:
"Reznicek has an outstanding selection of wines, rich and classic, full of top producers and very easy to understand. Well made and the prices are great."
Best By the Glass List
– Recognizes the best by-the-glass list
Heunisch & Erben, Vienna
"The by the glass program at Heunish & Erben seems to have its own character and fingerprint. You can really feel a certain philosophy and person/s behind it. Besides having wines from different origins and styles it also includes lesser known varieties and regions which are always exciting to explore and discover. The list also includes Sake and a wide selection of fortified wines, both, dry and sweet," says jury member Raimonds Tomsons, Best Sommelier of Europa and Africa 2017, about the winning wine list.
Best Sparkling Wine List
– Recognizes the best wine list with sparkling wine
Palais Coburg – Silvio Nickol, Vienna
"Palais Coburg – Silvio Nickol has an amazing selection of sparkling wines. I loved the verticals from many great Champagne producers, with some rare gems here and there," says jury member Salvatore Castano.
Special Jury Prize
– Recognizes a venue that has done something extra with their wine list, such as the direction, the style or the value.
The category is presented by Schloss Gobelsburg
MAST Weinbistro, Vienna
"MAST has to be one of my favorite wine lists in Europe. The focus and curation is unmatched," says jury member Rajat Parr.
Fellow jury member Véronique Rivest, Best Sommelier of Canada, says:
"A highly curated and personalized wine list, with lots of unique propositions. A very serious list with a super cool attitude."
Best Short List
– Recognizes the best list with up to 200 references
O Boufés, Vienna
"What a great wine list! Every wine is there for a reason, with a clear natural focus to the list. It simply makes you want to try them all," says jury member Véronique Rivest.
