Aubergine Restaurant is centrally located in Cape Town in the inner-city suburb Gardens in a previous private house dating back almost 200 years. The interior is warm and welcoming with plenty of yellowwood furniture throughout the venue and a cozy fireplace for winter. The cooking is terrific and the chef owner understands wine evolution better than many sommeliers and is a firm promoter and supporter of sommellerie in South Africa. The result is a remarkable (and mature) cellar of goodies for a small restaurant.

By far one of the most interesting lists in South Africa, with wines well worth travelling for. The interest certainly lies in the rarity, you will find the most iconic wines of the Cape in the form of George Spies ‘GS’ 1966 and more than 10 year old MR de Compostella, to name a few. Or maybe you fancy some 20 year old Lafite on magnum? It’s all there in this very comprehensive list with applaudable vintage depth.
