ëlgr Restaurant Wine List
About ëlgr Restaurant
ëlgr Restaurant on Kloof Street in Cape Town took advantage of the third alcohol prohibition to revamp and hire a new sommelier, LeRoi Van de Vyver, previously of the famed Belthazar Restaurant and Wine Bar. The main wine list is incredibly well thought out, and LeRoi has introduced an ever-changing Sommelier Selection list with some of South Africa's most coveted allocation wines. (Fun fact: LeRoi has made it to the finals in many sommelier competitions, so be sure to ask him about the stress of using port tongs on stage!)
Just like great wine, the food is meant to be shared. You can mix and match your own, or there is the option for the Chef's Choice sharing menu! They also have some tasty and Instagram-worthy cocktails and a few beers and mocktails if that is your vibe.

A succinct list with a strong focus on sustainability, both within the choices on the list as well as the way of working. A focus on local producers – not only wineries – and even the hopefully soon more wide-spread idea to serve some wines by the glass ’on tap’. All the best for the future years!

With an approach of trying to understand and execute the full scope of sustainability, this place use their location strategically to ensure – and gain – integrity in the sustainable practices. Here, they pave the way to make sustainability a community project by activating and working together with the local neighborhood to recycle as well as emphasize local produce and wines. But, sustainability entails more than only recycling and using local: It also means work-sustainability – a subject far less debated and cultivated in our industry but equally important. This restaurant goes to far lengths to reach transparency on this subject, trying to achieve a personal relation to the wineries they feature in order to understand their practices. That level of integrity requires a massive investment to pursue, but brings in an important angle to being sustainable in a place, where it is highly relevant to put the work aspect of sustainability on the agenda, says jury member Nina Jensen about the gold in the International Final 2023.

A convincing and well-thought-through holistic approach taking several aspects of sustainability into account. Thank you for setting examples for other colleagues to follow! says jury member Marc Almert about the win is Sustainable Wine List 2023
