Denassus, literally ”be on your nose”, is a Catalan expression referring to something that is “really good”. This wine restaurant/bar launched in August 2019 and is owned and managed by Alejo Mailan and Sergi Ruiz. They both met while studying the sommelier program, but they also worked together at Bar del Pla, a magnificent wine bar in the Born district, and they dreamed about opening their own wine bar.
Denassus is a lovely tiny restaurant, with a long bar and high tables. The terrace has a special soul. The venue is located in Poble Sec, a historic neighbourhood that still maintains narrow and untidy streets with a lot of charm. But, also, they are located on Calle Blai, famous for its bars and lively restaurants, where you find most of the theatres in the city.
I like this place for the energy and positivism that both of the owners share; it is a pleasure to see them work. It is a very popular and busy place, but try to find a table on the terrace, it's a magic experience.
Although the atmosphere is free and easy, the gastronomy is first class. The ”duck bomb”, a kind of duck croquette is wonderful, an explosion of flavour; the wild sea bass ceviche is extremely delicate; there is no shortage of long-cooked dishes such as beans with squid and pork. Its chuletón steak is one of the best that can be tasted in the city.
I assure you that you will have fun visiting this place.
About the Denassus Wine List
The wine list consists of around 100 references, all carefully selected. Also, part of the attraction is the twelve wines by the glass that changes every week. 75% of the wines are natural or ”out of the box” wines (Anglore, Ls Salada, León Barral, Laia Esmel), and 25% are conventional wines (like Valduero, Muga, Clos Martinet). For sure, there is something for everyone here.
Both Sergi and Alejo are constantly searching for authentic wines and small producers, and I suggest you let them recommend the wine, honestly.
