The penultimate stop on the Star Wine List of the Year international tour 2024/’25 brought the team to Vienna, to name the best wine lists in Austria at Weingut Fritz Wieninger in Stammersdorf, on Sunday 15 June.

After a wonderful event in Vienna celebrating Austria's best wine lists, Star Wine List is staying in the capital for one more day to reveal the Gold Star winners in the tour’s grand final, in which winners from across the globe vie for international victory. We have sommelier teams flying in from 21 different countries, but who’ll be joining them from the home crowd?

Well, not one but two winners of Best Sparkling List, for a start – Gold Stars were awarded both to Die Weinbank, in Ehrenhausen, and to last year's winner, Vienna's Restaurant Amador. Plus, a Grand Prix winner whose list the judges deemed “worthy of legend ... your chance to go to heaven more than once.”

Take a look at all the winners of Star Wine List of the Year Austria, below. And see how that completes our finalist selections in tomorrow’s Star Wine List of the Year International Final.

The jury panel for the Austrian competition included Master of Wine Heidi Mäkinen, Master Sommelier Stefan Neumann, and two ASI Best Sommelier of Europe winners: Salvatore Castano (2021) and Mikk Parre (2024).

“One of the most remarkable observations when looking at Austrian wine lists is how great lists are to be found all over the country,” said Mäkinen. “The enthusiasm for wine culture reflected by the lists entered into this year's awards proves Austria is not only a great wine-producing country, but an amazing destination for anyone interested in wine, whether wanting to explore locally or enjoy top-class international selections.”

Categories and criteria

Star Wine List judges the wine lists in several categories such as the Best Sparkling Wine List and Best By the Glass List. These categories are the same across all of the awards. In addition, local categories may be added. We have commercial partners for certain categories, such as the Best Austrian Wine List, presented by Austrian Wine. The commercial partners are, however, never involved in the selections of finalists or winners – that is completely up to our independent jury panel.

The criteria for the jury are straightforward but not simple: vote for the most exciting wine list representing the category.

The winners in the international categories will qualify for our International Final in June 2025, where they will face off with the category winners from other countries and continents.
