Row on 5 Wine List

About Row on 5

Located in London’s prestigious and quietly iconic Savile Row in Mayfair, this Michelin restaurant embodies luxury on many levels. Not only in the immaculate fit-out, but in the high-end, attentive service that truly defines the experience – from chefs presenting their precisely executed, seasonal British dishes to the warm front of house, whose members will even offer to dry clean your coat while you dine.

Be ready for the tome-like wine list – with 2,400 listings, you will find almost anything you could wish for, be it traditional, innovative or saké. They have optimised Coravin, offering nearly 60 wines by the glass alongside three creative wine pairings: one for the adventurous, one with a more classic slant, and one for high rollers seeking top-tier names; as well as a non-alcoholic pairing featuring several in-house creations.

The detail given on the list is equally impressive – all wines by the glass are accompanied by descriptions, and every Champagne discloses disgorgement dates where provided by the producer. Each wine clearly states the varietals, and although the list is ordered by category (sparkling or colour) starting with country grouping, it expands confidently into broader regions such as Eastern Europe and Oceania. There is no shortage at the back end, with a wonderful array of sweet wines to discover. The additional wonderful snippets of history, featured producers or story-telling flashbacks from the sommelier, makes browsing closer to long-form poetry reading. What I particularly enjoyed was the breadth of price points – from sub-£100 bottles to icons and aged treasures alike – acknowledging that wine should be enjoyed by everyone, whatever their budget.

A wine compendium of this size could easily be daunting, however, the friendly, intelligent sommelier team makes the experience calm, generous and deeply enjoyable, injecting humanity into fine dining and being unafraid to use humour in their interactions. For the true oenophile, I would suggest studying the list online beforehand, as your dining partner will most definitely lose you for an hour once you’re drawn into this rich and compelling read.
