California Wine List of the Year UK, presented by The California Wine Institute 2021

Dinner by Heston is the two Michelin starred restaurant in the luxurious Mandarin Oriental hotel in Knightsbridge. The menu is a twist on the more common ’classic fine dining with a modern edge’ by being ‘modern fine dining with a historical edge’ – each dish annotated by the decade/century from which it originated, reinventing and updating food fashions from as far back as the 1700’s. The interior is slick and professional with plenty of 5-star warmth. The overall experience marries posh with playful; it’s original yet comfortingly accessible.

Best Long List of the Year UK, presented by Matteo Lupi Wines 2024

The list at the 2-Star The Clove Club (two-star) stetches close to 800 references, yet doesn’t feel remotely unwieldy, no bottle unnecessary. Wines from all over the world are given their chance to shine; the very best producers at all price points have been selected. Showcasing a mixture of classics with age and newcomers/rising stars, there is a focus on small growers and organic and biodynamic producers where possible, but not for their own sake. Wine pairings are offered (including one interspersed with ambient brewed rare teas). By the glass offers plenty of interest—fine wines and older...

It covers the classics from all over the world and more esoteric options, also demonstrated in their wine pairings. In traditional fashion, The Ledbury has been buying and storing their own wine for years, which has given them a deep reserve of older vintages to share. Their selection of whiskies and Madeira is also well worth a look.

Address: 113 Great Portland Street, London

Best Short List of the Year UK 2021

The wine list at one-star Portland is given just as much attention as the menu and changes almost as frequently. The wine buying team scour old cellars, auctions and off the beaten-path wine merchants to create one of the best mid-sized lists in town (120-bins) celebrating wine in all its diversity. In the cellar you will find natural skin-contact wines mingling with red-trousered claret and everything in between. The food is innovative European, served with the buzzy vibe now commonplace amongst 21st century no-table-cloth-star-holders. As well as the textbook examples, they deliver value v...

This slick Italian restaurant from two of the three founders of The Clove Club fuses quality with cool in Clerkenwell. With a Tardis-like quality, there’s an inviting bar up front, with the large dining room languishing behind, including three beautiful private dining spaces (the covered terrace for 20 is particularly special). Save for Champagne (grower and grand marque) their wine list is exclusively Italian, arranged per region and leaning towards classic producers. There’s a handful of esoteric options, whether that be natural or skin contact, but this is a list to delight traditionalists....

Pied a Terre is an enduring stalwart of classy, contemporary French fine dining – the longest standing independent Michelin-starred restaurant in the UK no less – yet one that has moved with the times and their global wine list is as sharp as you’d expect. Buying en primeur year on year coupled with meticulous storage affords them depth and to list wines only when ready – and there’s plenty at all price points with some age (a rarity of lists these days). Stylistically everything is covered with aplomb, with an unsurprising focus on French wines (not to mention a concise but top-drawer Cali...
