The George is a smart 18th century Grade II listed pub in Fitzrovia, just north of Soho, meaning it’s a building of significant historic interest. Recently rejuvenated by the unstoppable JKS Restaurant group, its group wine director Seamus Sharkey has an illustrious CV, coming from five years at The Ledbury. Downstairs is firmly a pub, with appropriate food (albeit smartly prepared and sourced) and a few wines to go with. Three dining rooms are upstairs, where you’ll find an elevated British menu and the wine list. A unique English Sparkling Wine Bar is the main feature, offering more than 150 references from around the UK, and a further 50+ still wines. The rest of the world is cannily covered by way of five whites and five reds from each country, at a range of price points from sensible to splurge. So, whilst the list is somewhat themed, it’s not restrictive. Clever.
