With its unpretentious bar food, excellent natural wines and contemporary art, Bar Normal is a highlight of the Prenzlauer Berg district. A feel of elegant simplicity permeates the whole bar, which is warm and welcoming, with minimalist yet comfortable seating. But despite the bar’s name, the food here is so good, so far removed from standard bar fare that it is thus absolutely NOT normal! As for the menu, European Fusion would be the best way to sum it up with, for example, Dutch bitterballen as a starter, French lemon chicken for main, and truly incredible deep-fried churros for dessert. The menu, like the wine list, changes frequently - don’t forget to check online for the latest iteration, and it’s recommended that you book well in advance as it has rapidly become a firm favourite amongst in-the-know Berliners.
There’s a wide-ranging natural wine list, and the service is attentive and friendly. It feels very Berlin - unshowy and yet surprisingly good. With this new bar, owner Van Anh Le manages what few have done before: create an excellent bistro without frills – in other words, completely normal.
