Swedish wine list winner closing doors
Swedish Wine Center in Malmö, Sweden - the wine bar that won a Gold Star in the Best Swedish Wine List category when the Star Wine List of the Year Sweden was celebrated last April – is closing. This week, the owner couple Jeanette and Johan Bohman announced that they filed for bankruptcy for the business.
"Our finances cannot handle the rent that the landlord is asking for. For us, this means an increase of almost 100% and after the new year 24/25, the rent will increase by almost as much. Already in July 2023, we notified the landlord that the rent for 2024 was not relevant as the world situation is as it is," the couple writes on their Facebook page.
Swedish Wine Center opened in 2020, just when the pandemic emptied bars and restaurants. Despite some tough years, Swedish Wine Center has run the business with great success. In addition to a Gold Star and several Silver Stars in Star Wine List of the Year Sweden over the years, they have also, among other things, been named the Wine Bar of the Year by Swedish wine magazine Allt om Vin, been recognized by Svenska Dryckesakademien, and mentioned in media far beyond Sweden's borders.
However, Johan and Jeanette are not leaving the industry. Now they will devote more time to Skivarp's Gästgivaregård, which they also run.
