Wallsé has won the Best Austrian Wine List category of the 2023 Star Wine List of the Year New York awards. The category was presented by Austrian Wine.

The winners of the Star Wine List of the Year New York were announced today in a ceremony at Vinexpo America. Wallsé has won the category Best Austrian Wine List.

“Wallsé commits everything to the remarkable diversity of Austrian wine,” said judge Doug Frost MW MS. “For those of us who love the many lesser-known grapes of that country, but even more those who obsess over the age-worthiness of their great Rieslings and Grüner Veltliners, this is not a wine list; it's a treasure trove.”

Wallsé's Wine Director Ben Scheffler was honoured by the award: "Thank you, I’ve always been a big fan of Austrian wines and when the opportunity presented itself to join Wallse it was a no-brainer - here I have been able to go down the rabbit hole of Austrian wines."

Presented by Austrian Wine, the Austrian Wine List award is given for an exceptional wine list of Austrian wines.

The award was presented by Rajat Parr, Star Wine List founder Krister Bengtsson, and Norwegian wine media star Liora Levi, who is also Star Wine List’s Ambassador Manager.

“Far too few restaurants offer a reasonable representation of Austrian wines, though the country's combination of aromatic whites, fruity reds and wines of all weights and bodies, accompanied by cleansing acidity, makes virtually every cuisine better,” Frost continued.

Wallsé beat top restaurants in New York to win the title. The silver medallists were:

Blue Hill at Stone Barns
Eleven Madison Park
Koloman Restaurant
La Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels

Wallsé was also a joint winner of the Best Medium-Sized Wine List, along with Pinch Chinese.

About Wallsé

It’s the creation of Chef Kurt Gutenbrunner, who also owns Wallsé Next Door.

A native Austrian, he apprenticed at the Relais et Chateau Richard Löwenherz in the Wachau region, where he learned about the wine-making process and developed a great appreciation for the wine of the region. These wines are still featured in his restaurants today.
