Karin Ericson new ambassador for Star Wine List in Malmö
Writer and wine lover Karin Ericson is taking over the coverage of Malmö's wine scene for Star Wine List from our previous ambassador Rebecka Lithander.
Welcome Karin, tell us, who are you and what do you do?
"My name is Karin, I live in Sweden's coolest city on the border to Europe, and besides having worked as a copywriter for many years, I've also worked as a restaurant critic. Writing is simply my job. I am a trained sommelier, wine journalist, and lecturer at the Swedish sommelier school The Wine Hub. Naturally, I've also worked in a restaurant for eight years, both in the kitchen and as a waitress, but few people actually know that."
What's the state of the wine and restaurant scene in Malmö and Skåne?
"After a rather sleepy period following the pandemic, it has exploded in recent months. New wine bars and restaurants have been opening continuously, bringing new life and energy to the restaurant streets and making it fun to go out and drink and eat in the city again. There is still a strong focus on natural wines, but there's starting to be more diversity, and several places are now going beyond having just fun, funky bottles on the list and are working to build a list with quality and depth."
"Compared to when I started as a restaurant critic fifteen years ago and there wasn't a single wine bar, today we have many, and the beverage is getting more and more focus. Young guests today have a great awareness, and we now have many skilled sommeliers, and more and more restaurants are investing in educating their staff."
What are you looking forward to highlighting as an ambassador going forward?
"The fun, vibrant, and playful Malmö. I also hope to bring some of the new restaurants into Star Wine List; it will be exciting to see how they develop their lists. Here, we might not have the large, extensive lists, but many are good at having a well-selected assortment, and we have, for example, a champagne bar with a fantastic selection of grower champagne by the glass. Then I hope that some restaurant dares to be even more niche in its beverage selection. A vermouth bar just opened. That's a good sign."
