The French-inspired Copenhagen restaurant, Bistro Boheme, has been awarded a Gold Star for the Best Medium-Sized wine list in Denmark.

"[Our philosophy is] to make everyone happy," said Head Sommelier Christian Gustafsson Cazón on accepting the award. "We're producer-oriented - producers that we love but, also, we’ll always have an open eye for new producers. It's a classic list more or less."

American judge Doug Frost MW MS explained the intricacies of crafting wine lists in the medium-sized category: “Measured against a long, voluminous list, a medium-sized list can’t possibly be as deep, but it can be every bit as exciting as the long lists. Even more importantly, a medium-sized list writer has to make choices, providing character and a unique personality to the list. So it is with Bistro Boheme: it’s choosy in spots and expansive in others, especially if you are on the hunt for phenomenal Burgundy.”

The award was presented by category sponsor Daou Vineyards at a ceremony in Copenhagen on 2 September. Bistro Boheme was also named winner of the overall competition, with another Gold Star in the Grand Prix category. "This really was unexpected, really an honour," Gustafsson Cazón said during his second appearance on the stage. He added, "I have no more words right now but, wow, thank you so much. Wow."

This event marked the first stop on Star Wine List’s international tour, which moves next to Riga, to celebrate the best Baltic wine lists, and will conclude with an International Final next summer.

Categories and criteria

Star Wine List judges the wine lists in several categories such as the Best Sparkling Wine List and Best By the Glass List. These categories are the same across all of the awards. In addition, local categories may be added. We have commercial partners for certain categories, such as the Best Austrian Wine List, presented by Austrian Wine. The commercial partners are, however, never involved in the selections of finalists or winners — that is completely up to our independent jury panel.

The criteria for the jury are straightforward but not simple: vote for the most exciting wine list representing the category.

The winners in the international categories will qualify for our International Final in summer 2025, where they will face off with the category winners from other countries and continents.
