About The Catch
There are only a handful of modern fish restaurants in Berlin, and The Catch in Charlottenburg, an izakaya-style restaurant specialising in modern Japanese cuisine, is one of them getting ready to make a noise.
Visually it stands out - bright colours and manga-like illustrations by Latvian artist Harry Grundmann are skilfully combined with earthy tones, natural walls and lots of woodwork. The Latvian connection is no coincidence either; co-founders Alexander and Aleksandra Slobine already successfully run this concept in Riga. However, the fish does not come from the Baltic Sea, but is sourced directly from Japan and Spain. "Raw" offers sashimi, tataki and poké, "Rolled" around 30 fishy, but also vegetarian-vegan creations, deep-fried prawns and chicken for the classic karaage. There are also dishes grilled over the robatayaki, centuries-old method of cooking food over hot charcoal traditionally used by northern Japanese fishermen.
At the bar, drinks with Japanese spirits - sake, shochu, whisky and more - take centre stage. The wine and sparkling selection has an impressive 100 listings, featuring Germany, Austria, France and Italy. The white wines are especially chosen to match the fish dishes, and carefully selected with a broad and adventurous mindset. The list does not forget red wine lovers either.
