About Neighbourhood Wine
Simon Denman & Almay Jordaan unveiled this wine sanctuary in Fitzroy North in 2013 boasting a collection of 1200 bottles and 20 odd wines by the glass. Once you walk up the unassuming stairs off the street, you are greeted by a moody dimly lit room dominated by antique wood finishes and warm coloured surfaces. The space feels homely and offers an ideal setting to perch at the bar, where one can relish the tunes of jazz and blues records from the 70s.
The food is unpretentious, celebrating classic Australian seasonal fare with a focus on traditional cooking and simplicity.
Pick a wine by the glass to give yourself the time to peruse the extensive wine list. Alternatively, there is a smaller list called the ‘Everyday Wines’ which is just a page long and detached from the main list - a short navigation to find tasty drops under $120! Aptly named, this locale serves as a 'point-de-rencontre' and draws regulars and wine enthusiasts from the neighbouring area but also across Melbourne, especially when fresh allocations are listed and hospitality connoisseurs seek to acquire the rare and special sought-after wines. Anticipate a commitment to low-sulfur wines and a dedicated advocacy for artisan producers hailing from Australia and Europe, with a special focus on the Jura. The selection naturally permeates into declassified wines, shining a light on the vanguardists. You can clearly see Simon’s taste and philosophy across this selection which champions producers who make small quantities using ethical practices showing provenance and vintage.
