On via Ponte Pietra, one of Verona’s prettiest streets, “the friar’s alcove” is a venerable Veronese institution with outdoor seating and a vast selection of wine. The cosy interior is bustling and intimate with little room for maneuver. Overseen by owner-chef Massimo Perna, the menu includes classic local staples like homemade donkey ragù, risotto all'Amarone and gallina croccante (roasted Veronese hen).

The extensive wine list (156 pages) has something for every taste and budget, ranging from a glass of Valpolicella Ripasso starting at 7 euros to a 2009 Château Mouton Rothschild that will really blow the bank!
