The moderate climate and rich soils of the surrounding countryside provide ideal growing conditions for a diverse range of grape varieties, resulting in wines that range from the velvety rich Amarone of Valpolicella to the zesty freshness of a great Soave Classico.

Within the ancient walls of the city itself, visitors are understandably drawn to the vast sun-drenched piazzas, but it is in the nooks and crannies of the city, often down a deserted side street or back alley, that you will find some of Verona’s most alluring bars and restaurants.

Of course, Verona is as famous for its summer opera season as it is for being the setting for the ultimate Shakespearean tragedy; however, just as important to the city’s contemporary infrastructure and economy, is Vinitaly. The annual wine fair brings together Italian producers and international wine buyers from every corner of the globe.

During the hectic days of the fair, the city’s famous bars, such as the iconic Bottega del Vino, overflow with wine professionals and enthusiasts from all over the world. In a city as elegant as Verona, it is easy to be impressed by location, but it is more often the presence of a renowned chef that drives the success of a particular restaurant.

If you’re lucky enough to visit the city, we lead the way to some favourite wine spots in the city, carefully selected by the team behind the Italian Wine Podcast, which broadcasts from Verona seven days a week.
