On September 24, Star Wine List celebrated the best wine lists in Norway and the teams behind them for the fourth time, together with Norges Beste Vinkart. In the Sustainable Wine List (Beste Bærekraftige Vinkart) category, presented by Weingut Wieninger and Weingut Hajszan Neumann, Credo in Trondheim and Kontrast in Oslo shared the victory.

”It was very unexpected really, since the finalists weren’t announced so we didn’t know we were competing. But we are focusing a lot on sustainability, not only when it comes to wine but also the food and everything else. Sustainability is really important to us, and we have been working very hard to find a way that is not only good to flavour but also for the environment,” says Thomas Venuto, Head Sommelier at Kontrast.

For the Sustainable Wine List category, not only the wine list is evaluated, but also the stated actions of the venue, as described through a questionnaire in the application.

”This list shows how sustainability needs to be approached from various angles. It is not only listing wines that are made organically or regeneratively, but also constantly pursues to improve the ecological aspect of the products and their use, including packaging, transport and wastage,” says jury member Heidi Mäkinen about Credo’s winning list.

Fellow jury member Rune Rake says this about Kontrast’s list:

”A ’sustainable wine list’ refers to a list featuring wines produced with sustainability in mind. This encompasses several aspects, such as wines produced using methods that reduce the carbon footprint, limit the use of chemicals, and protect the local ecosystem. Equally important is sourcing from wine producers who consider their workers' welfare, providing fair wages and working conditions. The shared winner, through the efforts of several skilled sommeliers, has managed to source sustainable wines free from flaws.”

Norway was the second stop on our 2023-2024 International tour, and this was the fourth time we ran it in Norway. The event was a collaboration between Star Wine List, Norsk Vinkelnerforening and Kapital, and took place at Bristol Hotel in Oslo on Sunday September 24.

The jury for the event was filled with top wine professionals:
• Francesco Marzola
• Rune Rake
• Ole Edvard Berg
• Heidi Mäkinen MW
• Piotr Pietras MS

The criteria for the jury are straightforward but not simple: Vote for the most exciting wine list representing the category.

Skigaarden will now qualify for our International Final in June 2024, where they will face off with the category winners from other countries and continents.
