Timorasso, Colli Tortonesi, La Colombera, "Derthona", 2022From vines nearly lost among the sea of peach and apricot trees and forests of chestnuts ridden with white truffles, Timorasso has risen to become one of Italy's most noble varieties in the 21st century. Since 2000, winemaker Elisa Semino has been a key figure in leading the grape's Renaissance, being locally named the "Queen of Timorasso". Conjuring the je ne sais quoi of Burgundy, a rich mid-palate à la Chenin Blanc, with the exotic perfumed notes of Viognier, Elisa's expression of Derthona displays notes of white peach, tangerine, alpine mountain herbs, and almond flowers finishing with a salty minerality which will have you begging for another sip or bottle, Bin 023669

Colli Tortonesi, La Colombera, "Derthona", Timarosso, 2020If ever there were an indigenous Italian varietal that could rival the body & complexity of white Burgundy, it would be Timarosso. The "Colli Tortonesi" DOC zone, which remains exceedingly small in terms of total vineyard acreage, covers to the hills (colli) around Tortona, an ancient town in Piedmont's Alessandria province, not far from Piedmont's mountainous border with Liguria. Tortona was historically known as Derthona, or Dertona, and many Timorasso-based wines (including this one) carry that archaic name on their labels. Like so many Italian grape varieties, Timorasso effectively grows here and nowhere else, it had been practically extinct until a visionary local producer resurrected it and began attracting serious critical attention in the early 2000s.98
