Trattoria Al Pompiere Wine List
About Trattoria Al Pompiere
Trattoria Al Pompiere is an authentic local institution established in the first half of the last century by a retired fireman. It was named "Al Pompiere" by its early regulars in honor of the founding innkeeper. In one corner, a cured meat deli overseen for many years by the now-retired Natalino offers 35 hams and salamis; next to it, a cheese counter boasts more than a hundred Italian cheeses. The menu, which relies heavily on local products and producers, features simple seasonal dishes with an emphasis on the cuisine of Verona and the Veneto region, such as gnocchi with wild boar ragù from nearby Monti Lessini or braised beef cheek in Amarone sauce.
The cellar emphasizes local wines, in particular the powerful reds of Valpolicella, which perfectly complement the warm atmosphere of the interior and the locality of the food. The wine list also includes a wide range of white and red wines selected from all over Italy, as well as from France, Germany and Austria, all carefully chosen by chef and owner Marco Dandrea.
Al Pompiere was recently taken over by the Tommasi family wine estate, though Marco continues to curate the wine list with the same attention to detail and eye for smaller producers. Not to be confused with the recently opened Locanda del Pompiere, Trattoria Al Pompiere is extremely popular with both visitors and locals alike, so it’s advisable to book ahead to avoid disappointment!
