About Mon Oncle

Mon Oncle used to be part of the restaurant group whose jewel in the crown is Oslo’s three-Michelin-starred Maaemo, and owner Esben Holmboe Bang transferred it over to head chef Dimitri Veith in 2023 as a mark of respect. A French kitchen philosophy is at the heart of its concept, with super elegant dishes combining the best of Norwegian produce supplemented by French (when needed), and these form the different tasting menu options.

The interior is as elegant as the dishes, with see-through curtains separating the diners from the open kitchen. The large windows towards the street are not transparent, giving the restaurant a sort of secluded atmosphere. And this reflects onto the diners, who lower their voices – helped by the beautifully curated playlist. Yet this is by no means a silent, let alone a stern, restaurant (like the stereotypical idea of a French Michelin-starred restaurant). On the contrary, Mon Oncle has a very youthful and energetic vibe, and is as perfect for business as it is for a romantic dinner for two.

The restaurant’s French approach is also reflected in the wine list, which has a large selection of Champagne and wines from the Loire. It’s a passion of the owner and head chef, Dimitri Veith, who’s a Champenois by birth. Other French regions like the Jura and Alsace, as well as Bordeaux, are widely represented, and there some natural and orange wines, labelled “vin de maceration” – and even beers and ciders. The list is purely French – there’s not a drop of Italian wine available – making it unique in Norway.

Diners can choose between three different pairing menus per tasting menu, including prestige and non alcoholic options.
