About Ground Wine Bar

Ground Wine Bar is quietly positioned below street level in central Auckland, offering a calm and welcoming retreat from the pace of the city. The setting is cosy and intimate, with thoughtful use of space and discreet corners that encourage guests to slow down and enjoy their wine in comfort.

The food menu is deliberately concise and well judged, built around classic wine bar staples designed to complement rather than distract from the wine. Expect baked Camembert with Rewarewa honey, traditional French saucisson, and a solid selection of cheeses and charcuterie – simple, familiar and well executed.

Ground works well for almost any occasion. It is an easy place to drop in for a single glass, meet friends, or spend an unhurried evening exploring the list. The atmosphere remains relaxed and approachable throughout.

The wine list is mainly curated by Aleks Shchepetkin. He has honed his craft through sommelier roles at various well-known restaurants in Auckland. The selection by the glass is extensive and well balanced, covering key winemaking regions from around the world alongside a strong representation of New Zealand. There is enough diversity to suit a wide range of tastes and, for visitors to Auckland, it offers an excellent opportunity to discover some of New Zealand’s finest wines in a single setting.

The fortified wine section deserves special mention, particularly the sherry offering, and a thoughtful selection of South African wines. This reflects the influence of co-founder Martin Cahnbley, who is behind Planet Wine, a respected wine distributor, as well as Cahn’s Wines & Spirits, the specialist wine shop located directly above Ground Wine Bar. That influence adds depth and credibility, yet the list never feels narrow or personal in focus. Instead, it remains inclusive and carefully curated, with wines suited both to classic preferences and to those seeking something more distinctive.

The bottle list is organised by grape variety, making it easy to navigate and encouraging exploration. One of the highlights is the “What rhymes with Orange?” section, featuring serious, classical producers such as Joško Gravner and Bressan, alongside other compelling skin-contact wines.

Overall, Ground Wine Bar is a confident addition to Auckland’s wine scene. With a thoughtful wine programme, knowledgeable owners and staff, a comfortable setting and a clear sense of purpose, it is a reliable destination for both casual visits and more focused wine exploration.
