Categories, criteria and judging

Star Wine List judges the wine lists in several international categories, such as the Best Sparkling Wine List and Best By the Glass List. These categories remain the same across all awards but, in addition to these, local categories may also be added.

Certain categories have commercial partners supporting them, such as the Best Austrian Wine List, presented by Austrian Wine. However, commercial partners are never involved in the selections of finalists or winners – that is completely up to our independent jury panel in each region.

Jury panels are composed of sommeliers and top wine experts from countries across the world, often including a local judge for added insider perspective.

The criteria for the jury are straightforward but not simple: vote for the most exciting wine list representing the category.

The winners in the international categories automatically qualify for the Star Wine List of the Year International Final in June 2025, where they will face off with the category winners from other countries and continents.
