Five new Singapore Red Stars from Alvin Gho
Star Wine List’s Singapore Ambassador, sommelier Alvin Gho, has added five more wine places to our Singapore guide. Discover our new Red Stars.
Alvin Gho has reported for Star Wine List from his native Singapore since 2023. The first Singaporean to reach Advanced Sommelier status, Al (as he is known) has also represented his home country at the ASI Best Sommelier of Asia and Oceania, and Best Sommelier of the World competitions.
Having looked after the wine lists at some of the best restaurants and hotels in both Singapore and Shanghai, Al now lives near River Valley and has just opened a new wine bistro where “the food takes centre stage.”
How would you describe the wine scene in Singapore?
“The wine scene is getting a lot more diverse than it used to be. There’s more acceptance that wines can be different and that we don’t need to like everything and everyone.”
Have you noticed any trends on wine lists or in service recently?
“Champagne flutes are almost obsolete in professional wine places. And there seems to be more diversity across wine lists right now (or at least the ones I take notice of).”
What styles of wine are particularly popular with guests right now?
“I’m not sure what guests are after but the trade people are currently quite into Asian wines and winemakers.”
How can a venue impress you?
“If we’re talking simply based on a venue’s wine list, it’d have to be diversity and inclusivity. Even within a strong concept there needs to be diversity.”
