About Openwine
Openwine on Wale Street isn’t just a wine bar – it’s an enoteca, a space where wine is meant to be explored, discovered, and enjoyed at your own pace.
Founded by Raphael Paterniti, this cosy yet sophisticated spot embraces a European approach to wine drinking, with no fixed wine list in sight. Instead, guests are encouraged to browse the shelves lined with an ever-changing selection of South African wines, or seek recommendations from the exceptionally knowledgeable staff. Whether you’re in the mood for a rare Swartland Syrah or a crisp Elgin Chardonnay, the experience is guided by curiosity rather than convention.
Beyond the wine, Openwine’s Sunday music sessions bring a curated open mic energy to the space, where local musicians – some emerging, some well-established – create an intimate, laid-back vibe. It’s not about polished performances but about the joy of live music, shared over a glass (or bottle) among fellow wine lovers. Whether you’re there for the tunes, the conversation, or just the excuse to stretch the weekend a little longer, Openwine offers a space where good wine and great energy come together effortlessly.
