About Hjem
Restaurant Hjem is situated in the small village of Wall in the heart of Hadrian’s Wall country. Hjem (pronounced "yem") is both a Northumbrian and Scandinavian word for "home", making it an apt name for the restaurant which sees the very best produce of Northumberland come together with Scandinavian values and cooking from the Swedish chef patron. The 24-seat restaurant itself is tucked away within a pub, The Hadrian at Wall, with an open kitchen where diners can watch the culinary action, and a minimalist interior flooded with natural light and clean lines. They offer a single tasting menu and, a mix of small bites and larger dishes, prepared with Scandinavian precision and techniques. Wine pairings are available.
It’s a natural wine list, of medium length, including 24 sparkling and with a mix of regional styles and top Grower Champagnes. The majority of the still wines are from Europe, including Georgia and Slovenia, while the white section includes a decent range of oxidative, vin jaune and skin contact styles. The focus here is more on style and interest than offering a deep range from any one region, though that said there are several bottles with a bit of age. There are some really interesting sweet options, all available by the glass - and magnums for the thirsty.
