About Roots York
Roots is a modern one-star restaurant in York, the second site from Tommy Banks of Black Swan at Oldstead fame. The tasting menu on offer showcases the very best seasonal produce by way of cutting-edge, contemporary cooking, much of it grown or reared on the family farm on the North Yorkshire Moors.
Open for dinner on Wednesday and Thursday, and lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday, the restaurant’s generous international wine list has over 130 available by the glass. It’s broad and classic, with all countries and regions covered to a greater or lesser extent, though France accounts for the lion’s share of the list from the old world, followed by Italy and Germany
South Africa gets the biggest look in from the new world, meanwhile, with a smattering of wines from Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, though the European selection is likely to appeal most to more conservative drinkers. As with the Black Swan, you can view the wine list online and filter according to preference, be that by region, vintage, price or variety, which is a useful tool. And if you still can’t decide, simply opt for one of the two wine pairings, sit back and drink it all in.
