Constance Halaveli has the most gorgeous water villas this writer has ever set foot in: a spacious and breezy bedroom, luxurious bath and, the very best, a private terrace with direct access to the turquoise sea and a plunge pool to top it all off.

That said, if you’re a wine and food junkie like me, there is much more to do here than just water sports and sunbathing. There are three restaurants on the private island. Jing, located on the jetty, overlooking the ocean (and sharks after dark) offers Asian-European fusion cuisine and a beautiful wine cellar with a private table that can be booked for dinner. Jahaz is the buffet option, where dishes change daily, and Meeru offers à la carte with seafood and meat. There is also Kaika Sushi, which is only open for lunch.

The wine list is available throughout the restaurants, with a select few wines only offered in Jing or Jahaz. (However, I’m sure with a little planning, any wine can be arranged to enjoy the different restaurants.) The list is immense! There are more than 30 wines offered by the glass with Coravin, some of which are particularly famous.

The list itself focuses partly on the Old World, mainly France and Italy. In addition to the regular suspects of the French regions, the Rhône selection is stunning, with a good variety of producers, appellations and back vintages. (This might be due to the fact that the Corporate Sommelier of the Constance group, Jérôme Faure, hails from the Rhône Valley.)

There is also a fantastic selection of wine from the New World. For those who love South African wines, this list is a real treat – you can explore for weeks and really get to know not only a wide range of producers, but also relish in old vintages. New Zealand is also thoroughly represented.

The knowledgeable and enthusiastic sommelier team, led by Sree Menon, offers both set and tailor made wine tasting experiences for guests, in addition to wine packages for any set set menus.

If you are visiting Constance Halaveli, make a note that the sister resort of Moofushi is just a 30-minute boat ride away. The wine list there will not disappoint you either.
