Elisabeth may be one of Berlin’s most effortlessly charming wine bars – a space that draws you in for one glass and keeps you lingering for hours. Opened in December 2023 by Katie, a California native with over a decade in Berlin, and her partner Ole, the bar is a deeply personal neighbourhood project in the residential calm of Sprengelkiez, grounded in warmth, inclusivity, and a serious love for natural wine.

Named in homage to the former pizzeria “St. Bess” that once occupied the space – Bess being short for Elisabeth – the bar’s identity is steeped in continuity and care. Its interiors blend tactile richness with quiet elegance: a petrol-blue counter anchors the front room, backed by floral tile mosaics, candlelight, wood panelling, and shelves brimming with handpicked bottles. Downstairs, an intimate second bar features small wooden tables, soft lighting, and a sofa that, as locals will tell you, has already hosted its fair share of late-night stories.

But the heart of Bar Elisabeth is its ever-evolving, tightly curated list of biodynamic and natural wines, predominantly sourced from independent distributors around Berlin. There’s no formal menu here – just shelves full of possibilities and a team, like the engaging Indigo behind the bar, ready to guide you. Whether you know your pét-nats from your piquettes or are new to the “glou-glou” lexicon, the staff’s approach is warm, playful, and entirely without pretence. Guests are encouraged to taste and explore; the bar happily opens bottles on request, turning the evening into a conversation – about grapes, growers, and everything in between. Paired with small snacks like lemon olives, it’s easy to see why a quick stop for a glass often turns into a multi-hour session at the bar.
