About Bar Copains
Copains means “friends” in French, which may either reflect this establishment itself – a collaboration between long-time mates Morgan McGlone, Nathan Sasi and Sali Sasi – or the camaraderie they encourage among their guests. Either way, it's exactly how this charming neighbourhood bar approaches wine: as something to be shared.
The wine list, curated by Group Sommelier Ishan Kaplish, celebrates both local and global producers, leaning on the elegant and/or artisanal, from energetic Australian newcomers to cult European producers (a page dedicated to the Jura gives a fair idea of where this list sits stylistically).
By the glass, it’s all about the sweet spot between personality and approachability – wines that will hit just as nicely on a Tuesday night snack sesh as they would mid-Sunday long lunch. The by-the-bottle offering is really an extension of this philosophy, with the common threads of integrity in farming and character in the glass.
Much like the kitchen’s French-inspired dishes, the wine list thrives on balance. It’s classic at its core, but with enough curiosity to surprise even seasoned drinkers. It’s easy, familiar, unpretentious and above all, generous – the sort of place you arrive for a quick glass and end up staying all evening.
