Jonathan Gouveia, sommelier at Formel B in Copenhagen, won the Nordic Sommelier Championship 2023, held at Glo Hotel Art in Helsinki on October 8.

"In the competition, I focused on doing my own performance as well as possible. I think I succeeded well in the tasks, and it was nice to do them. Blind tasting was the most challenging part, like in competitions in general", says Gouveia in a press release.

All in all, ten candidates from the Nordic countries competed. In the semifinals, the candidates were challenged with a theoretical test, a written blind tasting of two sweet wines and practical service, serving two glasses of Austrian wine in three minutes.

Nikolai Haram Svorte from Norway finished second in the final competition and Emma Ziemann from Sweden took the third place.

Liora Levi, president of the Norwegian Sommelier Association and Star Wine List's Ambassador Manager, was part of the competition's jury. She says that the competition was very even and that the competitors showed a very high level of knowledge in the tasks.

"Each contestant had their own strengths in performing practical tasks. The theory part is always challenging, also this time", says Liora.
