The Latvian sommelier championship was held in Riga on 15 September. Since the event does not allow former champions to compete, the doors were wide open for new candidates. In the end, the title was won Madara Greize-Kapzema from Whitehouse restaurant in Riga.

"I am very proud and happy," Greize-Kapzema said afterwards. She is the second female to become a Latvian sommelier champion.

The sommelier championship, presented by Moldavian winery Château Purcari, was held at the Whitehouse restaurant in central Riga. Besides the three Latvian finalists that qualified, as is the custom, sommeliers from Lithuania and Estonia were also welcome to compete. Coincidentally, the frequent competitions held in the region is likely one reason why the sommeliers in the Baltics have had such a lot of success, most notably with the Latvian Raimonds Tomsons winning Best Sommelier of the World in 2023.

Tomsons was master of ceremonies for the day – which also saw Star Wine List celebrate the top wine lists in the Baltic states.

The tasks were a mix of practical service tasks, blind tastings and theoretical questions.
