Joris Gutierrez Garcia from Québec has been named the Best Sommelier in Canada, 2023. The award, made by the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS), adds to the collection of honours Gutierrez Garcia has already accrued in his career, including Best Sommelier in Québec which he won in September this year (also presented by CAPS).

At only 31 years old, Gutierrez Garcia already has over 15 years experience of the restaurant industry under his belt, including time at El Zaziummm, and sommelier at the Club Chasse et Pêche, both in Montréal.

In 2013, after a DEC in human sciences, while he was already working at Pied de Cochon, Gutierrez Garcia enrolled in evening classes at the ITHQ. “I told myself that to become a waiter at Pied de Cochon it would be good to have a better foundation in [being a ] sommelier. I was not passionate about wine at that time, but it was with my first lesson at ITHQ, with Stéphane Leroux, that my curiosity really turned into passion,” he said in a press release.

This win entitles him to participate in the forthcoming ASI Best Sommelier of the Americas Contest in 2025.
