Star Wine List’s Social Media Manager, Caroline Leblanc, takes on the role of Quebec Ambassador (and that of new mum) just in time for the city’s Winter Carnival – adding five Red Stars to our guide.

The Carnaval de Québec attracts thousands of visitors every year, opening up the city through food, drink, music and much-loved activities like the canoe race fought through the frozen waters of the Saint-Lawrence River, the night parade, or the welcoming sight of Bonhomme’s Ice Palace. It’s a magical time to explore.

And we know the places where wine lovers can sneak off to after enjoying the festivities, to warm up in comfort – Caroline has selected five new Red Stars as she takes on the role of Quebec Ambassador, in addition to taking care of our social media channels (you do follow us on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok, right…?).

Based just outside of Montreal, Caroline grew up in Quebec and “couldn’t be more excited” to be representing the city for Star Wine List: “I’m thrilled to promote a city I adore and share its charm with the world,” she says. “It’s a real pleasure to have the ‘mission’ to discover the city’s hidden gems while going to visit my family and friends.”

This comes just as Caroline gets to grips with motherhood, having welcomed her first daughter in November. “Life is busy,” she admits, “but I wouldn’t have it any other way.” A sommelier and experienced marketing manager, Caroline is also Vice President of the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers. She joined Star Wine List in 2021.

As she gets to grips with “one-handed typing” in order to submit her Star Wine List reports, we get Caroline’s opinion on how her Canadian hometown ranks for wine.

How would you describe the food and wine scene in Quebec?

“The wine scene is an amazing melting pot of creativity and terroir. Think European influence with a rebellious Québécois twist, what’s not to love?!”

How can a restaurant or wine bar impress you?

“Great energy, knowledgeable staff, and killer food pairing suggestions have their way to my heart.”

Have there been many changes or emerging trends in recent years?

“I would say that the natural wines ‘wave’ is slowly becoming less important. Chefs are putting a spotlight on hyper-local ingredients – farm-to-table isn’t just a concept here, it’s a love language.”

What are you looking for in a wine list?

“Variety with a sense of place. I love a list that’s playful yet thoughtful, with options that make you rethink your perhaps pre-made choices. Also, I love it when a wine list makes it hard for me to make a choice; rather, it is by listing rare appellations, producers or styles, or by having too many options to choose from.”

Do you have any pet peeves, either on wine lists, in service, or otherwise?

“Of course! A wine list without vintages is like a book missing its ending. Also, overly snooty service – wine should bring joy to guests, not intimidation.”

How is it juggling motherhood with working in the wine profession? Any challenges, perks or surprises?

“It’s a balancing act, but I’ve mastered one-handed typing while holding a baby. The biggest perk will probably be introducing my child to the world of aromas – though, for now, it’s limited to freshly extracted milk! The greatest challenge has been to avoid tasting wine and putting my WSET Diploma studies on hold, but this is all temporary and it is so rewarding.”

What does February have in store for Quebec and what are you most excited about?

“The Winter Carnival is an absolute must, and now, visitors and locals will have great options to visit when they want/need to warm up!”
