For over 35 years, Nyetimber has been on a remarkable journey to produce the finest English sparkling wine, rivalling the world's best sparkling wines. On 17 April, Nyetimber celebrated Germany’s best sparkling wine lists with Star Wine List.

There are few countries in the world where sparkling wine is taken as seriously as Germany, making the Best Sparkling Wine List one of the most hotly contested categories in the Star Wine List of the Year Germany 2023.

This year the honour went to Berlin’s Nobelhart & Schmutzig, announced at a ceremony in Berlin on 17 April 2023. And the category was presented by Nyetimber, a Global Partner of Star Wine List.

"It was an honour to be nominated, and an honour to win. Whatever we do, we try to do it as good as possible and with a holistic approach," said Nobelhart & Schmutzig's Head Chef Mischa Shaefer when he accepted the award.

Nyetimber’s milestones

The driving force behind Nyetimber's world-class sparkling wines is its owner, Eric Heerema, and the winemaking duo, Cherie Spriggs and Brad Greatrix. Since 2007, they have crafted and nurtured Nyetimber wines, helping to build the reputation of the English sparkling category as well.

Nyetimber established its reputation early on, by exclusively using estate-grown grapes — the three celebrated sparkling varieties Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier — and releasing England's first demi-sec sparkling wine, now known as Cuvee Chérie. Other ground-breaking accomplishments include Tillington, the first designated single vineyard sparkling wine from England, and being the world’s first-ever sparkling wine producer to publish riddling dates. Nyetimber was also the first UK producer to use dark amber glass to protect the wine against UV light, and the first English sparkling wine producer to launch a prestige cuvée, 1086 by Nyetimber.

Winemaker Cherie Spriggs’ skill and dedication were recognised in 2018 when she received the prestigious "Sparkling Winemaker of the Year" award at the International Wine Challenge, one of the most highly regarded wine competitions in the world.

Nyetimber and Star Wine List of the Year Germany is the perfect match

Nyetimber's commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed, especially in Germany. The brand has steadily grown its presence in the country, establishing strong partnerships with prestigious establishments like the Ritz-Carlton Berlin. As a testament to Nyetimber's global appeal, Germany is one of the few markets outside of the UK to offer the Coronation Limited Edition bottle.

“We are proud to be partnering with Nyetimber,” said Krister Bengtsson, founder and publisher of Star Wine List. “Germany is one of the world’s most significant sparkling wine markets, making the sparkling wine list category an exceptionally important one.”

The Best Sparkling Wine List winner is Nobelhart & Schmutzig

Nobelhart & Schmutzig, a 1-Star Michelin restaurant in Berlin, not only won the Best Sparkling Wine List category, but also the prestigious Grand Prix category, which recognises the best wine list with more than 600 references.

”A mind blowingly fascinating and exciting list for lovers of all bubbly things. Superb selection of beers, including an impressive collection of Gueuse and Lambic. Incredible offering of cidres and other fermented fruit beverages and of course great selection of classical sparkling wines. Chapeau!” said jury member Julie Dupouy-Young.

The Star Wine List of the Year is an international celebration of the world's finest wine lists and the people who create them. With competitions taking place in the Nordics, South Africa, and Australia, the winners in the international categories will now compete against their peers in the International Final in Stockholm, Sweden on 19 June 2023.
