What began in the 1970s as a bold hillside replanting project has grown into one of Napa's benchmark Cabernet programs, with estate sites like the steep, rocky "Borderline" vineyard showcasing the intensity of volcanic soils and meticulous, sustainable farming. TD-9 is a Cabernet Sauvignon that celebrates a bold move. In 1973, John Shafer, our founder, went from riding morning commuter trains in Chicago to teaching himself to drive an old TD-9 tractor in our Napa Valley vineyard. He had never grown grapes or made wine in his life. That spirit of risk-taking and adventure continues to inspire everything we do at Shafer today.
