As Star Wine List launches its first guides to Prague, meet our ambassador in the Czech capital, Gabriel Riel-Salvatore. He has added 15 great wine places to our map for wine lovers.

Montreal native Gabriel Riel-Salvatore moved to Prague in 2016. “The reason? Falling in love with a Czech woman and the attraction of the European lifestyle,” he tells us. “This city quickly captured my heart with its inspiring vibe, blending old-world charm with a vibrant modern energy. I couldn’t imagine a better place to call home.”

A writer, editor, translator, wine judge and skilled digital content creator, Gabriel’s experience across both the food and wine sectors makes him a dynamic part of the dining scene in Prague and beyond. In his first report for Star Wine List, he has curated a selection of 15 Red Stars for our map, from wine bars and bistros to Michelin-starred fine dining restaurants.

“If you’re looking for a top-notch wine experience, Bokovka is always a solid choice,” Gabriel says. “For natural wine enthusiasts, Alma is a hidden gem you won’t want to miss. And when it comes to pairing exceptional food with an equally stellar wine list, The Eatery truly delivers. Honestly, though, every spot I recommend is absolutely worth exploring – each one has its own unique charm!”

We asked Gabriel a few questions about his new role.

Welcome to Star Wine List! What are you most excited about in your new position as Prague Ambassador?

“I’m thrilled to join the international Star Wine List network and can’t wait to showcase Prague, my beloved adoptive city, to wine lovers worldwide. Beyond its stunning architecture and rich history, Prague boasts a dynamic culinary scene that’s begging to be explored. Local wines have made incredible strides and are sure to surprise even seasoned enthusiasts. Add to that an impressive selection of imported wines.”

What should people know about Prague that they don't already?

“Prague is home to 10 thriving urban vineyards, some of which are crafting award-winning Pinot Noirs and Rieslings that are absolutely worth discovering.”

How would you describe Prague's food and wine scene at the moment?

“Prague’s food scene gravitates around French, Italian, and Asian cuisine, often blending with local culinary traditions to create exciting fusion dishes. There’s also a strong nod to the flavours of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, with many restaurants showcasing this rich heritage. Some wine lists focus exclusively on wines from the region, featuring gems from Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary, and northern Italy – a true celebration of Central European terroir.”

Have you noticed any emerging wine trends recently?

“Czech wines are better than ever, with whites making up 70% of local production – a huge advantage in a global market where white wine is on the rise. Global warming has also boosted the quality of reds, though they remain more vintage-sensitive. Czech natural wines are gaining traction internationally but haven’t gone mainstream yet, making them a hidden gem on local wine lists and in select wine bars. Many producers are experimenting with Qvevri ageing, adding a unique twist. Don’t miss trying Pálava, a local cross of Gewürztraminer and Müller Thurgau, which produces stunning results with its aromatic and vibrant profile.”

When is the best time to visit Prague?

“For the perfect wine-sipping experience, May and June are ideal for enjoying crisp whites on local terraces before the summer heat sets in. Late September to early October brings ‘Babí léto,’ the Czech Indian summer, paired with burčák season – a sweet, yeasty, partially fermented wine sold at markets and street corners.

“November is all about Saint Martin’s Day, when restaurants serve up traditional goose dishes paired with young wines. And December? It’s pure magic with charming Christmas markets (though skip the mulled wine unless you’re feeling adventurous) and a fairytale vibe.

“Honestly, Prague is a year-round gem – never too cold, never too hot, like a well-kept wine cellar!”
