December is “when Milan truly becomes itself again” says Cristina Mercuri
Milan Ambassador Cristina Mercuri has added new Red Stars to our city wine guide, just in time for Christmas. Here are her top tips for making the most of the city this December.
Milan is looking – and feeling – decidedly festive. The Christmas lights were switched on this past weekend (Olympics-themed, in anticipation of Milano Cortina 2026, in case you were wondering) and the city is filling up with merrymakers enjoying the sights, the ambience… and the wine.
Happily, Milan Ambassador Cristina Mercuri has got four new Red Stars for our guide to wining (and possibly dining) your way across town. Take a look at our updated selection and don’t miss Cristina’s golden rule for this time of year. Read more below!
What’s your favourite thing to do in the city in December?
“Milan in December has a very special energy: the lights, the shop windows, the scent of roasted chestnuts in the air. I love walking through Brera or Porta Venezia, stopping for a glass of wine in a familiar bar and just watching how the city dresses up. It’s the time when Milan truly becomes itself again – luminous, cultured, a little frenetic but always refined.”
What are your top tips for visitors to Milan in the run up to Christmas?
“Take your time and don’t rush. Spend a morning at the Pinacoteca di Brera, have lunch in one of the small bistros around Porta Romana, and end your day with an aperitivo overlooking the Galleria or in one of the wine bars featured on my Star Wine List. And one tip – book ahead! December in Milan means full houses, even in the most hidden places.”

Is there any Olympic excitement, as the city prepares for the Winter Olympics?
“Absolutely. Milan is used to reinventing itself and building anticipation. From construction projects to visual communication, you can feel that the city is getting ready to show itself to the world. Even the Christmas tree in Piazza Duomo reflects this spirit – a mix of international flair and unmistakable Milanese pride.”
What will you be doing for Christmas and New Year's Eve?
“Christmas is always with family, calm, and full of good bottles to share. New Year’s Eve will be more spontaneous – maybe a few days in the mountains, but always with a good glass in hand. For me, the holidays are above all a time to slow down, recharge, and get ready for a new year of challenges and travel.”
