About Gasthaus Helmut
This restaurant has the name “Gasthaus” in its name. The word “Gasthaus” generally suggests a restaurant with simple furnishings, rustic cuisine, beer on tap and waiters balancing full glasses of beer. The makers of Gasthaus Helmut in Gohlis took this somewhat low-threshold expectation into account and thus increased the excitement. So, it was a stroke of luck to get a table there.
It's no wonder that three award-winning chefs and a female chef, as well as a no less highly decorated sommelier, decided to open a restaurant on this corner next to the Friedenskirche, rather than fine dining like its predecessor. While Lisa Angermann and Andreas Reinke continue to run their restaurant Frieda a few streets away – also listed on Star Wine List – Daniel Kreßner and Christian Wilhelm are actively on site with a small team - as chef and restaurant manager. The quartet once met at the (now closed) two-star Falco. Their restaurant, named after Grandpa Helmut, signals that they are not looking for stars, points or toques from renowned restaurant guides and are consciously leaving the pressures of the past behind them.
And so, as their own bosses, they also decided, for example, to only open from Monday to Friday and only in the evenings. Equipped with new freedom, they now implement their standards, their knowledge and their skills free from the meticulous expectations of their guests: Largely regional, they bring in international culinary influences and wines to taste. As a matter of fact, Daniel Kreßner's menu has a large format but is kept short: down-to-earth dishes with finesse.
Beer from the tap and in bottles is of course also available, but it doesn't play a major role. Most of the tables are filled with bottles or glasses of wine from growing regions such as Saale-Unstrut, the Elbe in Saxony, Baden or Württemberg. Thanks to Wilhelm's expertise as a sommelier, Champagne Brut Réserve from Charles Heidsieck and a red Côte de Bourg from Chateau Falfas in Bordeaux also found their way to Gohlis. However, his wine recommendations are adventurous, pertinent, and just right. Indulge yourself and let Christian guide you to find the right quencher for you!
