Our first listing in Bamberg is a real gem! Edelfrei is a concentrated case for German wine: a restaurant and neighbouring vinothek (wine shop) built around long-term relationships with small producers.

Since 2017 the team has worked directly with German winemakers, developing small projects and a vinothek that turns with the menu. The open-pour list is deliberately curated – a mix of age-worthy classics and experimental, youthful styles – and regular tastings and producer visits turn the place into a working classroom for local terroir.

Hospitality at Edelfrei is earnest and curatorial; it’s about introducing people to personalities as much as to labels. The pairing of restaurant and vinothek allows a fluid conversation between bottle, plate and producer, which makes every visit feel like an encounter rather than a performance.

Behind the selection and curation of the range – alongside owner Johannes Weigand – stands, above all, sommelier Marlis Bohnengel. They try to keep it as diverse and deep as possible. A model for presenting German wine with depth and warmth – essential for drinkers who want local expertise and direct access to producers.
