  1. Address: Graf-Adolf-Platz 1, Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf native Antonios Askitis is well-known in his hometown. The sommelier, skater and Instagram star with Greek roots took over an old diner called the "Berliner Imbiss" which was a Düsseldorf institution famous for great french fries and maybe the best Currywurst in town. The Pelican Fly carries on this tradition. Delicious fries with homemade sauces and salads are served, and well-selected hip-hop music is pumping through the speakers. The Pelican Fly is located in the busy centre of Düsseldorf but offers a lot of outdoor space.

  2. Address: Herner Straße 12, Bochum

OA Winebar in Bochum is truly a unique place and a complete one-man show, run by Simon Jakob. The venue is furnished in a stylish and minimalistic way. A huge concrete sharing table is the centrepiece of OA. Loud music is played and especially during weekends, the place can be crowded with young and thirsty people. There is no wine list, so you either ask the host for a recommendation or go to the fridge yourself. The focus is completely on German wines, mostly natural. There is no food served but you can bring your own or order pizza or kebab. Simon will also have recommendations and call t...

    Address: Wiesenstraße 23A, Witten

Schmit´s Winebar is located in Witten in the heart of the Ruhrgebiet, just a short walk away from the main station. A beautiful place with the bar in the middle of the room and a wonderful backyard terrace. The food is a seasonal mix of French and Asian cuisine. They also serve delicious high-quality cheese. The wine list features a lot of young German producers and some French gems. It’s not super big but constantly changing and growing. Ask the lovely sommelier staff for a recommendation. They always have some good wines which are not on the list.

    Address: Rheinische Straße 12, Dortmund

Labsal is a real asset to the city of Dortmund. It is located in the "Unionsviertel", a neighbourhood which was known for the famous beer breweries back in the day. Now it has turned into a colourful and alternative quarter just a short walk away from the city centre. Labsal is a laid-back, everyday restaurant where everything is homemade, but you can also come just for an aperitif or a glass of wine on the backyard terrace. The wine list contains a lot of German wines from small producers, together with handpicked European labels. Mostly organic, with a lot of great natural wines. One of th...

    Address: Friesenwall 58, Köln

Bar Rix is a cosy wine bar founded in 2018 by the one and only Valentine Mühlberger in central Cologne. Valentine's mother is from France and she got bitten by the wine bug in the early 2000s in St. Emilion helping with the harvest. After that, she also studied oenology in Burgundy, including internships at Bize-Leroy and Chateau Latour! Back in Germany, she first worked as a freelancer to then fulfil her dream of a wine bar. The wine focus of Bar Rix is, as you can imagine, French and German with some gems from Austria and Eastern Europe. The list contains over 300 labels, and nearly all pr...

    Address: Hansemannstraße 33, Köln

The Frohnatur wine shop has now a lovely old-school wine bar called Frohnatur Weinstube in Cologne's trendy neighbourhood Ehrenfeld. Cosy and rustic in the best sense. They have a great selection of natural wines from all over Europe. The by-the-glass program is always interesting. My favourite page on the wine list is the "Thalys Sonderangebot". Thalys is a famous direct train from Cologne to Paris, so this section offers some rare French bottlings. The service crew is lovely and always there to help you find the right bottle. The kitchen crew uses only local products and they love to cook...

Located in Cologne's "Komponisten Viertel", Tanica is a treasure trove for wine lovers. With a lot of candles and Italian charm Tanica makes you feel at home quickly. The wine list offers a great selection of mainly French and Italian wines, from underdog producers to high-end big names. The by-the-glass and cocktail program is also more than mentionable. The style of the kitchen is Italian with some cross-over elements. Tanica is especially known for pasta and super fresh fish and seafood. The staff is passionate about the product and wines and will always help you to make the right choice....
