The creation of the 2013 vintage reveals the resonance between the Pinots noirs and Chardonnays, between acidity and fullbodied. The precise, elegant and tactile bouquet blooms in an extremely delicate powdery aromatic braid around three nuances: first citrus, then a more vegetal facet and lastly, spices. This precision reveals a simple and evident elegance where the wine, after an ethereal attack, amplifies and blossoms before ceding to an ineffable sensation of clarity. The delicate nose unfolds in swaths of color. The green of eucalyptus, mint and vetiver, the yellow-orange of mirabelle plums, apricot and orange blossom, the brown of pepper, cardamom and licorice sticks, and finally silvery saline and toasty hues. The mouthfeel is elegant, expressing luxuriant simplicity and precision. The refined and silky foundation becomes more pronounced at the heart. The finish is dominated by a salinity that leaves a deep sensation of consistency.

While on vacation in 1986, Michael Etzel came upon an 88-acre farm for sale located on Ribbon Ridge in the Northern Willamette Valley. After some deliberation, Michael purchased the farm with his brother-in-law, world-famous wine critic, Robert Parker, Jr. Michael began his focused pursuit by planting only Pinot Noir and slowly transforming the old farm into his jewel. While planting his own vineyard, Michael worked four harvests at Ponzi Winery. In 1990, Michael harvested his first crop and sold the grapes, except enough to make one barrel, to winemakers Ken Wright and Dick Ponzi. In 1991, a renovation of one of the barns led to the creation of Beaux Frères Winery and the beginning of a cult classic. Beaux Freres just celebrated their 25th vintage in 2015.

Chateau Mouton Rothschild has revealed its 2012 vintage label created by Miquel Barcelo, the final artist commissioned by the late Baroness Philippine de Rothschild. The label depicts two rams on their hind legs, matching each other’s strength, against a hazy watercolour background of greens and blues. Mouton Rothschild has commissioned an artist to design its grand vin label for every vintage since 1945, and the 2012 label was the final creation personally commissioned by Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who died in August this year. Inspiration for its Bordeaux 2012 vintage label came from the two rams featured on the chateau’s own emblem, said Barcelo. Born in Majorca in 1957, Miquel Barcelo has risen to prominence in the past two decades. His work was exhibited at the Paris Museum of Modern Art in 1996 and the city’s Louvre museum displayed his watercolors in 2004.
