Sommelier Yannick Benjamin is a force for good on the New York wine scene, and Star Wine List is pleased to welcome him to the jury panel for our 2026 wine list awards. “I feel honoured to support the passionate and courageous people who bring so much care, creativity, and joy to our industry,” he tells us.

Meet the finalists.

Yannick Benjamin isn’t just a sommelier, but a fervent advocate for inclusivity in the hospitality industry. Born and raised in Hell’s Kitchen (which he considers to be “the greatest neighbourhood in the world”), he is the co-founder of Wine on Wheels, a charitable organisation which has worked to support people living with disabilities since 2012. He is also the owner of family-run Hell’s Kitchen wine store Beaupierre Wines & Spirits, and Wine Director at The University Club of New York, an historic private members’ club in Manhattan.

A seasoned judge and panel taster, Yannick assesses wines for the 5StarWines Competition and TEXSOM International Wine Awards, this year joining the panel for the Decanter World Wine Awards. He’s won his own awards, too: in 2023, he received the MICHELIN Guide New York’s Sommelier Award; Wine Enthusiast named him Sommelier/Beverage Director of the Year in their 2021 Wine Star Awards; and he was one of New Mobility magazine’s People of the Year in 2017.

What’s more, Yannick’s East Harlem restaurant, Contento (now closed) received a Gold Star for the Best Medium-Sized List at Star Wine List of the Year New York in 2024 and so he’s no stranger to the competition.

In May 2026, Star Wine List will name the best wine lists in the New York metropolitan area at the fourth Star Wine List of the Year New York awards. A new member of our international jury, Yannick is our local expert on a panel that includes Missouri-based Master Sommelier and Master of Wine Doug Frost, and ASI’s current Best Sommelier of Europe, Africa and Middle East, Mikk Parre.

Here, we get to know our new judge.

What kind of judge do you think you are?

“I am passionate, thoughtful, and fair. I want people to succeed. Judging comes with a great deal of responsibility, and I approach it with empathy and respect, especially because I have been on the other side of the process myself.”

How would you describe the city’s wine scene?

“The New York wine scene is constantly evolving. Nothing stays static, and that ongoing energy and diversity are what make it so exciting.”

How does it compare to the rest of the world?

“New York has its own personality, just like London, Paris, or Montreal. Each city has its own character and style. What makes New York truly unique is that you can find wines from virtually every region in the world, all in one place.”

What, in your opinion, makes a good wine list?

“A good wine list starts with a clear sense of identity. It should reflect the cuisine, the concept, and the guests it serves. Balance is essential, with a thoughtful range of regions, styles, and price points so that every guest can find something meaningful. Organisation and clarity are just as important, making the list easy to navigate and inviting rather than intimidating. Above all, a great wine list tells a story and reflects the vision, care, and hospitality behind it.”

Do you use Star Wine List already?

“Yes, I do. I actually used Star Wine List during my last two trips to Italy, when I visited Rome and Turin.”

Why are you excited to take on this particular judging role?

“I live and breathe restaurants and hospitality, and I have been in this profession for over 30 years. As a second-generation hospitality professional and a former restaurant and wine bar owner, I understand the challenges behind building and maintaining a great wine programme. I feel honoured to support the passionate and courageous people who bring so much care, creativity, and joy to our industry.”

Is there any one category in this competition particularly close to your heart?

“I have a special appreciation for the Best Short List category. While it may seem simple, it is actually one of the most challenging. When selections are limited, every choice matters. The person curating the list must truly understand the audience, the cuisine, and the overall concept of the establishment. A concise and creative list requires strong vision and discipline, and I have great respect for those working within this category.”

How would you describe Star Wine List to someone who hasn’t heard of it?

“I describe it as one of the best guides available for wine lovers. The recommendations come from professionals who live and breathe the cities they represent, so you can trust that the selections reflect truly outstanding, wine-focused establishments.”
